2009
- In November, the Passion Play performers Frederik Mayet (Jesus) and Eva-Maria Reiser (Mary Magdalene) returned from a media tour through the USA and Canada. The performers were travelling through North America for almost one week having in total ten interviews with different television stations, radio stations and newspapers.
Apart from giving a variety of interviews, the Passion Play performers also visited a so-called Mega-Church in Los Angeles, the Crystal Cathedral. This church was built 30 years ago by Dr. Robert H. Schuller. Each weekend the Crystal Cathedral holds six mess and each time around 3800 people are attending.
This media tour has been an extraordinary experience for both performers.
- Rehearsals for members of the choir and the orchestra already started in October. For the main roles rehearsals start at the end of November 2009. The rest of the participants, for example the romans, crowd etc., start in January 2010
- In September, the main performers, together with the executive team, three journalists and two priests from Oberammergau, participated in a trip to Israel. All together 51 participants left on 6 September from Munich to Tel Aviv early in the morning. After tours in 1990 and 2000 this is the third Passion Play season where this trip was made.
For Christian Stückl, principal director, and Otto Huber, dramatic adviser and deputy director, the trip to Israel had two main purposes. Firstly, the performers were able to look intensively into the history of Jesus, his life and work. Moreover, by visiting the places where Jesus lived, the performers were able to understand the background in a better way and thus enhance their play later on.
The group was accompanied by priest Thomas Frauenlob, who, in 2006, was assigned by the Pope to accompany him to Rome.
The trip included visits to the Sea of Galilee, Bethlehem, Haifa, and Nazareth as well as important places in Jerusalem, as for instance the Mount of Olives, the Wailing Wall and the Temple Mount. The crew also attended mass at St. Anne's Church that, as tradition says, is the birthplace of Jesus' mother Mary. They visited the Church of Dormition, site of the Last Supper on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City. Moreover, a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where it is said Jesus was crucified and entombed, was also part of the Jerusalem tour. Together with Abba Naor, a Latvian Holocaust survivor, the group also visited the Holocaust memorial place Yad Vashem.
After this trip the participating performers returned well prepared to Oberammergau. The organisers are certain that visiting Israel, before the Passion Play rehearsals start in November this year, was an important experience for the performers.
- The - Pest play- will perform this summer in Oberammergaus passionplay theatre. As in good tradition, one year prior to the passionplay, the Pestplay will be performed by the local Oberammergauer people. This play tells the story of Caspar Schissler bringing the plague to Oberammergau that results in the wove to perform the passionplay. Directed as well by Christian Stückl (director of the passionplay 2010.)
